THE NUTRIENT RECYCLING COMMUNITY - AN INITIATIVE LAUNCHED BY THE FERTIMANURE PROJECT AND THE BIOREFINE CLUSTER EUROPE

Moved by the same aim, the BIOREFINE CLUSTER EUROPE and FERTIMANURE have strengthened ties to relaunch the community group, called Nutrient Recycling Community, and boost its activities and interaction among members. This group aims to foster collaboration with relevant initiatives and projects in Europe related with nutrient recycling and serve as a platform to exchange knowledge and good practices.

To properly focus and develop its actions, the Nutrient Recycling Community set up the following 5 Working Groups, which meet regularly to discuss the most relevant topics related to nutrient recycling:

  1. Technologies for nutrient recovery
  2. Agronomic performance of fertilising products
  3. Sustainability assessment (environmental, economic and social)
  4. New business models and market opportunities for BBFs
  5. Policy

The Nutrient Recycling Community was launched in March 2022 at the ESNI conference. Activities of the community started between March and September 2022, and different joint meetings with other projects have been organised.

All the working groups, except the one working in business models and market opportunities, has met at least once, and more activities and events are to be organised  during the following months.

The Biorefine Cluster Europe (BCE) interconnects projects and people within the domain of biobased resource recovery, striving to contribute to a more sustainable resource management in the framework of circular economy systems.

The platform is structured around the following 6 domains:

  • nutrient recycling,
  • renewable energy,
  • water recovery and use,
  • biomaterials & eco-design,
  • biochemicals
  • value chain assessment.

It has the ambition to create synergies and gather experts in networks by fostering and optimising the project dissemination and outreach to stakeholders.

Nutrient recycling is one of the cornerstone objectives of the Cluster, which initiated already in 2018 a Nutrient Recycling Community as a continuation of the EIP-AGRI Focus Group, in order to favouring the knowledge-exchange and build a community around the topics of nutrient recycling.
